Court facts

Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina

At the beginning of October 1992, military police were stationed in the premises of the elementary school in Lukavac. The military police illegally detained the married couple Aziz and Radinka Šahat for allegedly owning a radio station and collaborating with the Serbs on Ozren. Radinka was then in her fifth month of pregnancy. (Zijad Srabović et al., p. 5.)

Aziz Šahat was tortured and beaten with batons and punches all over his body and was threatened with a gun to make him confess to his alleged collaboration with the Serbs. (Zijad Srabović et al., p. 5.)

While the military police were beating Aziz Šahat, Zijad Srabović interrogated Radinka Šahat, treating her inhumanely, demanding that she admit that she and her husband Aziz owned a radio station and collaborated with the Serbs on Ozren. Srabović threatened to kill her husband if she did not confess. (Zijad Srabović and others, p. 5.)

Aziz and Radinka Šahat were held illegally in the premises of the elementary school for the next five days, even though Zijad Srabović, given his position, knew that there was no legal basis for such treatment and imprisonment of civilians. (Zijad Srabović et al., p. 5.)

Aziz Šahat testifies about brutal torture and interrogation in the gymnasium of the school in Lukavac, a place he still avoids even looking at. He is disappointed by the lack of initiative from local authorities to mark this former prison, because he believes the truth cannot and must not be hidden. Aziz believes a memorial would offer an important lesson to future generations about the kind of person one should — and should never — become.
