Lipovača

Lipovača is a pit 60 metres deep on Šehovina hill, not far from the center of Nevesinje. The pit contained the bodies of men, women and children, but investigators say that the grave was relocated. A search is underway for a secondary grave.

More than 50 Bosniaks were killed in Nevesinje in June 1992. Villages in the municipality were shelled and religious monuments were intentionally damaged or destroyed. (para. 673. Krajišnik, p. 245.)
At least seven children and several women of Bosniak nationality, detained in the basement of the heating plant in Kilavci, were killed by Serb soldiers at the end of June 1992 and buried in a pit in Lipovača. (paras. 670., 718. Krajišnik, pp. 244-245, 264-265.)
Ismet’s father, Smajo, was one of 33 residents of the village of Žulja who were brutally killed in 1992 and thrown into the “Lipovača” pit in Nevesinje. His deepest wish is for a dignified memorial to be built at the pit itself as a warning to future generations.
