The two pits of the Carevo Polje mass grave contained the remains of over 80 Serbs who tried to escape the municipality of Donji Vakuf by bus. The bus was attacked and the victims’ remains were later found in these pits in Jajce.
Court facts
The remains of 81 people, including two children aged seven and nine, were exhumed from the pits in 1998. In 2019, 21 years later, the remains of at least two people believed to have been Serbs who were killed in the war in the 90s were exhumed from another hidden grave in Carevo Polje.
The people found in this mass grave were part of a convoy of Serb refugees from Donji Vakuf who were trying to escape to Banja Luka in September 1995. The bus they were travelling in was attacked by Bosnian Croat forces as it passed through the abandoned village of Bravnice, near Jajce. The attack killed 81 civilians and nine members of the Army of Republika Srpska were also killed, police said. Several other people were wounded. The civilians who were captured in the ambush were taken to detention facilities.
There is no verdict in international or domestic courts that strictly relates to the crime committed in Bravnice. The Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina has launched an investigation into the case.
Branko recounts how his father, then a pensioner, was killed in the shelling of a bus carrying civilians. For him, marking sites such as the “Carevo Polje” mass grave near Jajce, where his father was found, is the only way to honour innocent victims.
